Trip begins; Omaha Zoo

We left Manhattan on August 28 after a hearty breakfast with Jenn's family at Early Edition, followed by several family pictures and a few tears. Early Edition was delicious as usual and it set the tone for our trip.

We first stopped in Omaha, Nebraska to visit friends who recently moved up there. They took us to an organic restaurant called McFosters Natural and Kind Cafe. McFosters impressed with their menu and atmosphere as it is similar to the visions Jenn has for her cafe. After we filled up our bellies, we headed to the Omaha Zoo. This zoo is quite large and had all of the animals we wanted to see such as elephants, orangutans, gorillas, tigers, lions, and bears.

We arrived shortly after lunchtime and witnessed a curious thing. Several of the lions and tigers we saw were fast asleep on the floor.

In addition, we witnessed two tigers and an orangutan eat their food, and immediately after they ate, fall a few steps from where they ate as if they drank Jim Jones' kool-aid. The cats that were not asleep were pacing as if they had gone mad. Perhaps they were waiting for their lunch, but the whole experience with those animals was a little bizarre.

On the other hand, the gorilla ate too, yet he withstood the urge to fall asleep.

We ended the experience with the zoo's newest attraction, a giant replica of the jungle filled with birds, monkeys and... bats! These creepy creatures were all over and several of them flew within inches of our heads and we were thankful our zoo trip was finished. I don't know anyone who likes bats and there were more of them in this jungle than any other animal at the zoo. This was our cue to leave.

Following the zoo, we made an impromptu stop to take in the Missouri River. Then we capped the night with a feast fit for Kings at PF Changs. Changs is best described as Americanized Chinese Food, and it was tasty.

The next morning we left Omaha and headed East toward Canton, Ohio.

The fifteen hour trip went fairly smooth and we arrived in Canton excited to see the Pro Football Hall of Fame the next morning.
